In today’s blog, we may boast… just a little. But really, it’s about you and one of the reasons why Fruit’s & Roots exists…. because everyone deserves delicious, nutritious and safe food.

We believe in providing our guests with the healthiest, and of course, the most delicious food possible. If we wouldn’t eat it, or serve it to guests in our own home, then we would not serve it to guests in our second home at Fruit’s & Roots. That is why almost everything we serve is organic and/or GMO free. Organic Dates at Fruits & Roots Vegan CafeWhy is this important? What is organic? What are the benefits? What are the risks? What are GMOs? Can pesticides harm us? Here are the answers to those questions.

What does “organic” mean?

The term “organic” refers to the way agricultural products are grown and processed. While the regulations vary from country to country, in the U.S., organic crops must be grown without the use of synthetic pesticides, bioengineered genes (GMOs), petroleum-based fertilizers and sewage sludge-based fertilizers. The benefits of organic food…

Organic produce contains fewer pesticides. Chemicals such as fungicides, herbicides and insecticides are widely used in conventional agriculture and residues remain on (and in) the food we eat. Source:  https://www.helpguide.org/articles/healthy-eating/organic-foods.htm

Are pesticides harmful?

There are numerous health hazards linked to the use of pesticides. Pesticides can have grave effects on the health of anybody consuming fruits or vegetables highly contaminated with pesticides. Several reports suggest that high levels of pesticides in food can lead to the development of diseases such as cancer, along with kidney and lung ailments. Children have organs that are still developing and are prone to catching infections and diseases. Any exposure to these high chemical residues can lead to childhood cancers, mental health problems such as autism and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. What are GMOs?

Genetically modified organisms, commonly called GMOs, are defined as organisms such as plants, animals or microorganisms where the genetic material (DNA) has been altered in such a manner that it does not occur naturally through mating or natural recombination. This type of technology is called “modern biotechnology,” “gene technology,” “recombinant DNA technology,” or “genetic engineering” This technology allows scientists to select individual genes to be transferred from one organism into another and also between non-related species. One of the primary objectives of developing plants with GMOs is to improve crop protection against plant diseases caused by viruses or insects.
