We often get wrapped up in the momentum of celebrating the New Year and looking forward to a fresh start, but the reality is most New Year’s resolutions fail soon after January 1.

If your 2019 resolution is to become vegan or incorporate more healthy options into your diet, we are here to help you succeed. Here are five tips to get you started and help you follow through so that 2019 is a year of healthy living:

1. Start Small. Pick One Thing.

What is the one thing about your diet that you wish you could change most?  Is it giving up dairy?  Maybe coffee?  Start there.

For your health, for the animals and for the planet, we would love to see you thrive in a 100% plant-based life, but we know the reality: For some, at first, this transition can be difficult.  Your Fruits & Roots family wants more than anything for you to succeed.  That is why we support any, and all steps you may take toward this life.  Starting small, with one thing is a start.

Small smart choices + consistency + time = RADICAL DIFFERENCE  -Darren Hardy, The Compound Effect

When you feel ready, add the next element of your transition. Soon enough you will be amazed by the RADICAL DIFFERENCE each small step brought you to.

2. Plan and Prepare.

“A Goal without a plan is just a wish.”  -Antoine de Saint-Exupery

Planning works.  Most of us lead hectic lives.  It’s easy to let your health take a back seat when you are bombarded with a million other things you need to do in your day.  It becomes convenient to stop for fast food or pick up a frozen dinner.

Pick a day, perhaps the day you food shop.  Plan your meals for the week.  Prep your food. Prepare healthy snacks and pre-made lunches to bring with you to work.  Also, having food prepped and portioned in your fridge makes it easy to whip together a fast, healthy meal when you get home.

If you don’t bring lunch to work, we invite you to stop by and see us.  Short on time?  Choose from something on the menu that doesn’t take much time for us to cook, such as Summer Rolls, Chili Chili, or one of our many amazing salads.  One very filling and fast option is a smoothie.  Our smoothies are made with homemade cashew milk.  We also add oats to keep you fueled.

3. Add Juice or Wheatgrass.

This goes back to taking small steps, but this small step is packed with a huge nutritional punch.  We have a variety of fresh-pressed juices for you to choose from.  Many ask if we add sugar to them.  We don’t, but we do use a combination of fruits and vegetables so that you not only love the taste but the health benefits as well.  In one juice you can get a meal full of nutrients on the go.

Add a wheatgrass shot to your day.

Two ounces of wheatgrass juice has the nutritional value of five pounds of the most nutritional organic vegetables.

Our wheatgrass is sourced locally from https://www.gotsprouts.com/

We offer 1oz or 2oz shots of wheatgrass.  If you are in a rush, please call ahead so that we can have it ready for you.   The wheatgrass machine moves slow, but only because it is doing its job to squeeze every bit of nutrition into your shot!

4. Build Up to Becoming Vegan.

How about 50/50?  No?  Maybe 80/20? Incorporate health with compromise.  Maybe you can begin with 20% of your diet being plant-based.  Meet that goal for a couple of weeks and then add 10% more.  As you incorporate more healthy options into your diet, you may experience a change in your taste buds.

After religiously eating plants for nutrition, your taste buds will transform to make you love the sweetness of fruit and the crunchiness of greens.

5. Educate Yourself.

Knowing the truth about food and nutrition might make you want to take one giant leap into compassion and good health for 2019, and the rest of your life.  There are so many resources to choose from.  Here are just a few to start:
