According to Earth Day Network (https://www.earthday.org/2018/04/05/fact-sheet-plastics-in-the-ocean/), about 8 million metric tons of plastic are thrown into the ocean annually. Of those, 236,000 tons are micro plastics – tiny pieces of broken-down plastic smaller than your little fingernail. Every minute, one garbage truck of plastic is dumped into our oceans. The amount of plastic in the ocean is set to increase tenfold by 2020 and by year 2050, there will be more plastic in the oceans than there are fish by weight.

It can take 450 years for some types of plastic bottle to break down; one type, PET, though considered recyclable, doesn’t biodegrade at all.

While disposable food packaging has revolutionized the way we store and consume food, there is now so much of it that landfills can’t cope. The term “disposable” is actually a misnomer. According to Rachelle Strauss of the ZeroWasteWeek (http://zerowastebloggersnetwork.com), we never actually throw anything “away” – it’s really just put somewhere else.

In Thailand, native fishermen still wrap their lunch in banana leaves, which they then toss overboard when done. The leaves decay and fish eat the scraps.

While we won’t send you home with lunch wrapped in banana leaves, you’ll be happy to know that nearly all our take-out packaging is 100% biodegradable, compostable and made from corn. At Fruits and Roots, we make every effort to use environmentally sustainable products from respected green companies, including cups and lids by Fabri-Kal (http://www.fabri-kal.com/); straws and soup bowls by Eco Products (https://www.ecoproducts.com/); and to-go boxes by World Centric (http://www.worldcentric.org/). If we all do our small part, it can make a difference in a big way and reduce the spread of plastic into our environment.
