Cheese is often the number one reason people feel they can’t become vegan.  If you can relate, we dare you to visit us and try some of our favorite menu items that include plant-based cheese.

Take it from one of our very own, Nicole.  Nicole works hard behind the scenes in the kitchen here at Fruits & Roots and said she shed a tear with her first bite into our very popular vegan Grilled Cheese.  Yes, it is that yummy!

You see, the world of vegan cheese is evolving, and we are taking full advantage of that with menu items that will satisfy, comfort and make your taste buds happy.

Taste aside, plant-based cheese is a much healthier option than traditional cheese.  Here are some facts about dairy cheese and why you should avoid it:

Cheese can cause diabetes and heart disease

According to the Physician’s Committee for Responsible Medicine, “one-fourth of an average 12-inch cheese pizza contains nearly 13 grams of fat, including 6 grams of saturated fat and 27 milligrams of cholesterol.” All of that packs on the calorie content too, thus packing on the weight. Consuming too much cheese can lead to diseases further down the road.

So why is cheese so difficult to give up?  Why do you crave cheese?

It turns out there’s a reason behind our cravings. Cheese contains casein. It also contains casein fragments called casomorphins, a casein-derived morphine-like compound. Basically, dairy protein has opiate molecules built in. When consumed, these fragments attach to the same brain receptors that heroin and other narcotics attach to.”

Why Use Vegan Cheese?

Vegan cheese satisfies the cheesy urge without the health hazards of traditional dairy cheese.  It is becoming more versatile, with better taste and texture.  The right vegan cheese will melt beautifully into a yummy sandwich or dip, and you can avoid feeling the guilt you would with traditional cheese.

You may wonder what the ingredients are in non-dairy cheese.  We use vegan cheese from a fantastic company called Follow Your Heart vegan.  http://followyourheart.com

Several types of cheeses are available, like their delicious Smoked Gouda. Ingredients are 100% vegan, gluten-free, dairy-free, non-GMO and soy-free: filtered water, coconut oil, modified food starch, potato starch, sea salt, natural smoke flavor (plant sources), natural flavor (plant sources), olive extract.
